A tenancy agreement in Nigeria sets out the rent, deposit, repairs and notice, and ours is drafted by a lawyer for your state and type of property.

Common questions

What should a tenancy agreement in Nigeria contain?

It should name the landlord and the tenant, describe the property, and set out the rent, how and when it is paid, any service charge or deposit and what the deposit covers, who handles repairs, how long the tenancy lasts, how it is renewed and how much notice each side must give. It should be signed by both sides.

How much notice must a landlord give a tenant in Nigeria?

It depends on the state and the type of tenancy. For a yearly tenancy in Lagos and in the Federal Capital Territory the law provides six months notice unless the agreement says otherwise, with shorter periods for monthly and weekly tenancies. A good agreement states the notice period plainly so there is no argument later.

Does a tenancy agreement have to be stamped?

Tenancy agreements attract stamp duty, but under the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 a lease with an annual value below ₦10 million is exempt, so only larger leases need to be stamped. We advise on stamping and on registration where the term is long enough to need it.
