Power of attorney drafted by a lawyer

A power of attorney in Nigeria lets someone you trust act for you on property, banking or business matters, which helps if you live abroad.

Let someone you trust act for you on property, banking or business matters, with a document drafted by a lawyer.

A power of attorney lets a person you choose sign documents, manage property or deal with a bank on your behalf, which is especially useful if you live abroad. We draft it to cover exactly what you want and nothing more, arrange notarial attestation and advise on registration where it relates to land. You get the document and a plain explanation of what your attorney can and cannot do.

Common questions

What is the difference between a general and a limited power of attorney?

A general power of attorney lets the person you appoint handle a wide range of matters for you. A limited one covers only what you name, such as selling one property or dealing with one bank account, and ends when that task is done or on the date you set. Most people need the limited kind.

Does a power of attorney need to be notarised or registered in Nigeria?

If you sign it outside Nigeria it should be signed before a notary public or at the Nigerian mission so it is accepted at home. A power of attorney that deals with land is registered at the land registry of the state, or at AGIS in Abuja, before it can be used for a transfer. We arrange both.

Can I cancel a power of attorney?

Yes. You can revoke it in writing at any time, and the person acting for you must be told. Where it was registered the revocation should be registered too, and the people the attorney dealt with, such as a bank, should be informed.
