Common questions
What should an employment contract in Nigeria include?
The job title and duties, where and when the person works, pay and how it is paid, leave and sick leave, any probation period, notice on either side, confidentiality and the ownership of work, disciplinary and grievance steps, and how the contract ends. It should be signed by both sides and the employee should keep a copy.
What notice period does Nigerian law require?
For workers covered by the Labour Act the minimum notice rises with length of service, from one day in the first three months to one month after five years, and the contract may set a longer period. Many senior and managerial staff fall outside the Act, so for them the contract is what governs.
Can I include a probation period?
Yes. The contract sets the length of probation, how performance is reviewed and the shorter notice that applies during it. It should say clearly when the person is confirmed.
